How to Become a Mompreneur

If you’ve been at stay-at-home mom for a while now, you may be itching to get back into the workforce, to have a career, and to do something outside of changing diapers and driving your kids to and from soccer practice. In fact, you may even have started searching job boards and posted your resume. But nothing has stuck out because, quite frankly, you are first and foremost a mom, and you want the freedom to be a mom at a moment’s notice, such as when your son is sick, or your daughter hurts herself on the playground.

If you hadn’t guessed, a mompreneur is a combination of the words “mom” and “entrepreneur.” In essence, that’s what a mompreneur is — a mother who is an entrepreneur, or someone who is running her own business. When you look up the word “multitasking” in the dictionary, odds are you’ll find a picture of a mompreneur. You are raising your kids while trying to juggle all the demands of running a successful mompreneur business, usually a home-based business. There are now millions of mompreneurs in the United States, and the trend is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, about one in three businesses in the United States are being started by mothers.

It’s also interesting to note that about 57 percent of successful mompreneurs wait to start their business later in life after the age of 40, indicating they wait for their children to be a bit older. Most successful mompreneurs are married with 95 percent of them not being the sole breadwinner.

Odds are, you have the mom part down pat. But how do you start a business that will allow you to stay at home with your kids? Here are some tips to help you get started.

  • Home business for moms. The easiest home business to start with the greatest flexibility (which is key for taking care of your kids) is a home-based business. With the advent of the internet, there are many options available. From blogging, accounting, consulting, and becoming a personal assistant, there are hundreds of options to choose from.
  • Pick a passion. If you’re going to dedicate your heart and soul to something outside of your kids, it had better be something you love. Ask yourself what are you passionate about. Do you love coffee? You can probably become an affiliate marketer for coffee distribution. Do you love to write? Bloggers and freelance writers make great money with a very flexible schedule. What about art? Start you own online art store, and sell your creations.
  • Find a support group. Similar to a playgroup for your child, invest in a group of like-minded women who can come alongside you and encourage you when the going gets tough. These women will be a wealth of information who have been there and done that and can help you navigate the legalities, the schedule, and the emotions that come along with running a business.
  • Invest in business coaching. A successful mompreneur like me can help you get your dreams and home business for moms off the ground.
